What is Umrah Badal?

Umrah Badal is a beautiful act of worship in which Umrah is performed on behalf of someone who is unable to perform it themselves. This may be a loved one who has passed away or someone who is permanently unable to travel due to old age or chronic illness.

Established in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, Umrah Badal provides families with a meaningful way to honour their loved ones and seek Allah's mercy and reward for them through this blessed act of worship.

The Virtues of Umrah

Umrah is one of the greatest acts of worship a Muslim can perform. It is a journey of devotion, repentance, and drawing closer to Allah. Every step taken towards His Sacred House is an opportunity to seek His mercy and forgiveness.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ encouraged the believers to perform Umrah and spoke of its immense reward.

"From one Umrah to the next is an expiation for the sins committed between them."
(Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)

He ﷺ also said:

"Perform Hajj and Umrah consecutively, for they remove poverty and sins just as the bellows remove impurities from iron, gold, and silver."
(Jami' al-Tirmidhi)

These narrations remind us that Umrah is far more than a physical journey—it is a means of spiritual purification, forgiveness, and renewal.

The Special Virtue of Umrah in Ramadan

While Umrah is virtuous throughout the year, it holds a unique status during the blessed month of Ramadan.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj with me."
(Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)

Although it does not fulfil the obligation of Hajj, the reward is equivalent to performing Hajj alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. This makes Ramadan one of the most beloved times to perform Umrah for those who are able.
